Pro Choice & Reproductive RIghts

I wholeheartedly condemn the Supreme Court’s intention to overturn Roe v Wade and to permanently deny women their right to determine for themselves what happens to their body and ask them to consider the devastating consequences that will occur .

As a member of the Roman Catholic church, I struggle with the thought of terminating a pregnancy but as a husband, father of a 16-year old daughter, and uncle to four nieces, I want the women in my family and yours to have more healthcare options availble to them, including the option to have an abortion. For me, it’s never been about condemning or supporting abortions, rather, I am fighting to protect women’s rights to have one if she chooses.

Government should not have a role, or legal standing, in denying women of their individual rights to make their own reproductive decisions. Last year, Texas passed Senate Bill 8 (SB8) which makes reproductive care very difficult to access in Texas. Texas also passed a “trigger law” that would take effect after 30 days if Roe were overturned to permanently ban abortions in the state. This would be an outright ban on abortion in our state. Texans’ fundamental rights — to healthcare, to life choices, to bodily autonomy — are under attack and we need to stand up and fight back.

Overturning Roe will be a tremendous setback for womens’ healthcare in America, a field we should be leaders in. Even today, with Roe barely standing, There are already very, very few abortion clinics — especially on the border as much of our district is.  People in our district deserve to get the healthcare that they need, whether that’s an abortion or antibiotics.

Regardless of the final decision, I am whole-heartedly committed to ensuring healthcare continues to expand and improve for women in America. I support federal protections for women’s rights to determine which medical procedures to undertake privately with their doctor and believe Congress has a role and responsibility to protect those rights by codifying a woman’s right to choose into law. That also means ensuring local access to medical clinics, including Planned Parenthood, and medical professionals that can provide essential reproductive healthcare services.

We the People must stop the Republicans’ attempt to erase generations of progress and permanently restrict the advancement of reproductive healthcare services for women in the U.S and demand the Supreme Court to revise their draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to preserve women’s right to have safe, legal abortions.
