April 15, 2022 – San Antonio, TX  —  Democratic candidate for Congress John Lira (TX-23) released the following statement regarding Governor Abbott’s recent immigration and border policy stunt

:

“Governor Abbott’s recent political stunt requiring ineffective inspections at Texas-Mexico ports of entry is yet another example of election year antics that is causing devastating impacts on  Texas, Mexico, and U.S. economies.

I call on all Governor Abbott to STOP playing games with our economy and the livelihood of American families and workers. I also call on all elected leaders on the border including Congressman Tony Gonzales to condemn Gov. Abbott’s actions and demand he stop wasting Texas taxpayer money on these disruptive and destructive ploys.

Gov. Abbott got what he wanted, attention and a photo opp with two Mexican Governors while small business owners, truckers, state troopers, and U.S. consumers were paying the price. His stunt added to the already long lines at border crossings causing orders to go unfilled, goods to rot, and empty store shelves. While American businesses lose money, prices are skyrocketing for U.S. consumers, adding to and prolonging the already high Inflation.

Just like the men and women in our National Guard in Operation Lone Star, Gov. Abbott’s half-baked plan pulls State troopers and DPS officers from other important missions. This operation is yet another rush to failure and another example of big government disrupting ordinary people’s lives.”
